The Discovery That Changed Everything
Everything changed when oil was discovered beneath the East Texas soil.
Almost overnight, Kilgore transformed from a small farming community into a booming oil town filled with workers, investors, entrepreneurs, and dreamers chasing opportunity. The population exploded from just a few hundred residents to nearly 10,000 people in a remarkably short period of time.
By 1940, Kilgore stood at the center of the East Texas Oil Field, one of the largest oil discoveries in United States history. The city became nationally recognized for its intense concentration of oil production and rapid economic growth.
Perhaps the most famous symbol of this era was a single downtown block that contained an astonishing 24 oil wells packed tightly together. This extraordinary site became known as “The World’s Richest Acre,” a nickname that still remains part of Kilgore’s identity today.
At the height of the boom, oil derricks filled the skyline, and the streets buzzed with activity day and night. Kilgore had become a powerful symbol of opportunity and industrial growth in East Texas.

Their efforts eventually led to the creation of the Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation in 1987, an organization dedicated to preserving the city’s rich past for future generations.
Their vision helped ensure that Kilgore’s story would continue to live on.

The restored oil derricks now stand proudly throughout the city as reminders of Kilgore’s remarkable journey from small town to world-famous oil boomtown. But during the Christmas season, these derricks become something even more special.
Each year, the derricks are topped with illuminated stars that light up the city skyline, creating one of the most recognizable holiday traditions in East Texas. This tradition earned Kilgore its beloved nickname: “The City of Stars.”
